This isn't a story about the undead, or the Apocalypse. It's the story of the Team, how a small group of men and women deal with combat in a world gone mad.

“Jesus Christ! What the eff was that?” exclaimed Sergeant Williams, who had come back with the cell phones.

“I don’t know, but this is about to get bad. Naomi, tell your people to pull trucks across the bridge. The TCP is closed, as of RIGHT NOW!” She didn’t answer, just nodded and raced away. I heard truck engines starting as I jogged forward on the bridge.

“YOU, YOU AND YOU, COME WITH ME!” I yelled, pointing at Kolakowski, Hanebury and Boyd. The three of them, all Specialists, had been manning the Traffic Control Point, but I needed them now, especially Ski with his SAW. I was hoping a show of force could stop this riot in its tracks, because a riot was what was about to happen.

“LIEUTENANT, BRING YOUR GUYS BACK!” I yelled. Behind the crowd, screams erupted, that howl wailed again, chilling me to the bone, and everyone surged forward, onto the bridge. She had turned to face her men and order them back when a single pistol shot sounded, and Diana Brown threw up her arms as she was flung forward and onto the pavement. She disappeared under the feet of the single-minded animal.

One of her guys, I don’t know who it was, took a knee and fired a burst into the crowd, and it rolled back, like a wave meeting an immovable rock. Two bodies lay in the street, and LT Brown had been pounded into the pavement.

“CEASE FIRE! CEASE FIRE!” I yelled, but it was no use. The asshole with the pistol fired again, a half dozen rounds, and two soldiers fell. That was all it took, and the rest of them unloaded. It was a massacre, compounded by the crowd still pressing up from behind. Whatever was driving them, they were more afraid of it than of our guns.

Our guns, which quickly fell silent. In their wisdom, our leadership had only issued thirty rounds to each troop. What, honestly, did we need more than that for? Our captain had said. Now, I cursed his name, and dug into my vest, where I had two hundred and ten of my own ammunition.

“Come with me,” I said to my scratch team, “we’re going to get the LT. Everyone else, fall back to the trucks!”

The men passed me by, hurrying back towards the supposed safety of the two MRAPs. I pushed forward against the crowd, trying to get to Di, but I slipped and fell on a dead woman, and started to get trampled. Feet slammed into me, and my breath was driven out of my lungs. One kick landed just under my helmet, and I saw stars.

Right at that moment, I thought I was going to die, but then I heard the Ma Deuce mounted on one of the MRAPs open up, and the crowd surged backwards again, allowing me to crawl over to the side of the bridge and pull myself up. I took a second to gather myself, and, thank God for them, the three guys I’d grabbed charged over to me.

Forming a tight team, we started back, but the crowd came on again, and I ordered them to stop and fire. So help me God, I wish to this day there had been something else I could have done, but foremost in my mind was the thought that, if they got through my unit was dead, and beyond them was my wife and family.

I lined up on one woman, overweight and wearing some kind of pants suit. A state worker, maybe, but now her face was twisted in a rictus of hate and fear in the spotlights, and she had picked up a rock or a brick to throw at us. I fired, and she sat down with a huff in the street, a puzzled look on her face, then just slumped over.

I haven’t forgotten her, but I’d like to think, in light of what came later, that I spared her some suffering. Now that I know. Maybe I’m just making excuses for myself, but it weighs on my soul.

This book contains nine of the books in the Zombie Killers series, from "Falling" to "Bad Company".

Irregular Scout Team One Zombie Killers Series Books 1 10 eBook JF Holmes Talon Beeson

The first few books in the series definitely delivered on the premise provided in the "summary", namely, " It's the story of the Team, how a small group of men and women deal with combat in a world gone mad." The action was fast paced, and the characters, initially focused on a small team of National Guard members, possessed enough depth and richness that I was on the edge of my seat. However, the lack of any type of discernible editing, and the massive amount of errors made the later books in the series almost unbearable. After about book 5, it seemed to me the author was being paid by the page, and there was no effort to correct obvious mistakes in grammar and spelling.

This series is enjoyable as a result of its focus on human behavior when faced with unimaginably difficult decisions. There is tragedy and a plethora of ethical conundrums which add realism to the characters and depth to the story arc.
Having said this, as other reviewers have noted, the editing is so terrible I almost stopped reading a couple of times. I want to believe the author created this on a manual typewriter and never had anyone proof read the story. However, any modern word processing program would have caught many of the obvious grammatical and spelling mistakes that it's embarrassing to imagine this was created using a computer with a basic word processing program. Without the strong characters and good story arc, this series would rate a 1 star for me.

Irregular Scout Team One Zombie Killers Series Books 1 10 eBook JF Holmes Talon Beeson Reviews

Not a bad read. I really enjoyed 80% of the series. The prose and structure could have used a finer hand in the editing department but it flowed well enough to be enjoyable. Some overused stock characters but nothing too eye rolling. <SPOILER AHEAD>I wish he'd stuck with actual IST aspect instead of taking the "big picture" finale with the one great big evil scientist as well as the despotic warlord politician angle. The played out 'the virus has mutated' twist was just lazy. All and all I will be checking out the author's next read.
I really enjoyed the story of Irregular Scout Team 1. The book was well written and the story moves along well. The reader gets to know the characters and the bond they have with each other. As a Us soldier I felt really connected to the struggles of the characters. The author does a great job of making light of different military subjects which I found quite humorous. Maybe you have to serve to get the references.

I would have rated the book five stars if not for the poor editing. There was a lot of misspellings and misuse of words. I felt the author relied on Ms Word to edit the book rather than reading it himself or having someone else proof read it.
Well written with some interesting story ideas. More realistic than 90% of the zombie books i have read and i have read many. Author has to big of a hang up with leadership which can be distacting (all incompetent boobs). Also part where delta soldier stands by while a doctor handicapped someone was just to out their, otherwise decent story well written. Too many zombie books are all about military soldiers where this book gives the "team" a new twist, a good idea. Many zombie writers like to try to explain how zombies occur and try to explain medical changes too much which is impossible and distracting. Holmes is smart not dive into this subject to deep.
Edit I have finished the book, and although the spelling and grammar never really improves I've had to bump it to an easy 4 stars. Very good imagination with the story which is helped with a descriptive narrative. Great read for someone who likes zombie apocalypse stuff with a strong dose of military in it.

Original review below

Less than 4% in I found 8 very obvious spelling errors. I'm at well over 20 grammatical errors as well.

The story is decent, but every page I find something misspelled that just jars me out of the story.

Needs much better editing and someone to spell check. Will try to make it through the book in hopes the later stories improve.

The stereotypical craaaaaazy girl, racists, and token black guy are characters as flat as the tablet you're reading this on.

But hey, free long zombie novel that has a bit of military jargon interspersed with taking back the world... That's awesome.
Irregular Scout Team One The Complete Zombie Killer series ( Version)
John Holmes

It's the end of the world as we know it, and for the survivors, food and toilet paper are in short supply. What's not in short supply are the hordes of undead zombies shambling about looking for survivors to snack on. This is a compilation of all six of Holmes' "Zombie Killer" books, detailing the efforts of Irregular Scout Team One to not only survive, but to take back what is left of the world from the undead and roving bands of "eaters" and Mad Max types.

This is good stuff, action-packed military science fiction meets zombie horror, and Holmes, a 20+ year vet of the US Military, knows how to pull the reader in. I found myself up past midnight, unwilling to put it down until my eyes were slamming shut. Short version, it's good stuff, and totally worth the $7 for the entire collection.
The book series is fantastic. If your a Zombie fan, military buff or looking for a great read this is amazing. Snarky humor, realistic military action, this looks at the zombie apocalypse without the usual invincible savior of all... The author shows his experiences and knowledge with many of the details (things such as gas does become bad after awhile, .22 is great for zombies, actual hunger sucks) I'm highly impressed and can't recommend the series enough!!!!
